Hard X-rays emitted by starbursts as predicted by population synthesis models including a realistic fraction of interacting binaries

چکیده

We combine our close binary population number synthesis code with the formation mechanism of X-radiation in young supernova remnants and in high mass X-ray binaries, to predict the hard X-ray luminosity emitted by starbursts. We demonstrate that the impact of interacting binaries is substantial. Therefore, observations of hard X-rays with energies larger than 2 keV of starburst regions may highlight the importance of close binary evolution in understanding properties of active starformation regions.

The power of jets: New clues from radio circular polarization and X-rays

Jets are ubiquitous in accreting black holes. Often ignored, they may be a major contributor to the emitted spectral energy distribution for sub-Eddington black holes. For example, recent observations of radio-to-X-ray correlations and broad band spectra of X-ray binaries in the low/hard state can be explained by a significant synchrotron contribution from jets also to their IR-to-X-ray spectru...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Probing Electron-capture Supernovae: X-ray Binaries in Starbursts

We develop population models of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) formed after bursts of star formation and we investigate the effect of electron-capture supernovae (ECS) of massive ONeMg white dwarfs and the hypothesis that ECS events are associated with typically low supernova kicks imparted to the nascent neutron stars. We identify an interesting ECS bump in the time evolution of HMXB numbers...

The Lack of Gamma-Ray Bursts from Population III Binaries

We study the evolution of first star (Population III) binaries. Under specific conditions, these stars may produce high redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We demonstrate that the occurrence rate of GRBs does not depend sensitively on evolutionary parameters in the population synthesis models. We show that the first binaries may form a very small group (. 1%) of fast rotating stars through binary...

X-rays and Soft Gamma-rays from Seyferts, Radio Galaxies, and Black-Hole Binaries

Selected topics dealing with X-ray/soft γ-ray emission from accreting black-hole sources are reviewed. The shape of soft γ-ray spectra of Seyferts observed by OSSE can be well modeled by thermal Comptonization. A very strong correlation between the X-ray slope and the strength of Compton reflection in these sources can then be explained by thermal Comptonization in vicinity of the reflecting co...
